Milupi Confers with Women in Construction

Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development Minister Hon. Charles Milupi has held a meeting with the Zambia Association of Women in Construction (ZAWIC).
The Women in construction led by Association president Dorothy Mulwila have lamented to the Minister that they are living in destitution because the government owes them a lot of money for their routine and periodic road maintenance works.
Ms. Mulwila said the Association has a membership of over 3,000 and employs over 90,000 people countrywide.
She appealed to the Minister to alleviate the suffering of the women in construction by paying them their debt.
And Hon Milupi has said he has engaged his counterpart at the Ministry of Finance to negotiate for funds to go towards the construction sector.
He said the country has a lot of emergency works to be carried out in the road sector which if not urgently attended to might lead to possible disasters in some selected parts of the country.
The Minister said if the money is released part of it might be used to pay part of the debt owed to small-scale contractors such as members of the Zambia Association of Women in Construction who are involved in the routine and periodic maintenance on the road sector.
“I have engaged my counterpart at the Ministry of Finance to see how much money the National Road Fund Agency (NFRA) can release towards rehabilitation works of very critical areas in the road sector, which if not attended to can cause disaster in the country.” Hon. Milupi said.
The Minister assured the Women in construction that government is aware that it owes them a lot of money which if settled will be able to impact positively on the country’s economy.
He said he sympathizes with all the local contractors who are owed money in the infrastructure sector but has called for patience as Government works out modalities to restructure the country’s huge debt burden.
