Over 10 million Kwacha has been released to Sino-Hydro to work on the Nchelenge – Chienge road in Luapula province. Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister VINCENT MWALE says the contractor will immediately start working on the 32 terrible points along the 100 kilometers stretch to make it passable.
Mr. MWALE says the contractor will however fully start road works after the rain season as Government mobilised resources. He said this in an interview in Lusaka today.
The minister said the Nchelenge – Chienge road is important because it is an economic road that moves goods between Zambia and Congo. And Nchelenge – Chienge road project Resident Engineer Abedinego Chalikosa said the contractor has slowed down on the works due to lack of funding by the client.
Mr. CHALIKOSA explained that the contractor has raised a number of Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) which have not yet been settled. He however, explained that the contractor has been reasoned with and is currently patching bad portions of the road as he awaits further funding and the rains to stop so that he begins serious works.
Government gave the contract to construct and upgrade the over 100kms Nchelenge – Chienge road to Sinohydro Zambia Limited at a cost of K474. 5 million. The project also includes tarring of township roads in Nchelenge district.
